More security for old Android phones LineageOS

LineageOS – more security for old Android phones LineageOS is the successor of the popular CyanogenMod and is a custom ROM that completely replaces the pre-installed Android. By flashing the operating system, the warranty by the manufacturer also becomes void LineageOS is ideal for older smartphones, which do not receive updates any longer. This shortcoming leads to an increasing number of security loopholes over time and is especially critical for mobile phones as they record and store a huge amount of personal data.
In contrast, LineageOS has been supported and upgraded by its developers for a much longer time as compared to the official Android of mobile phone manufacturer. Many users even report that their smartphones started to function more responsively again once they had installed the leaner LineageOS system. Unfortunately, the installation of LineageOS is all but trivial.

  1. You should first secure all of the important data from your smartphone onto your PC before you install LineageOS. A backup app or AirDroid is suitable for this purpose. In the worst case, installation of LineageOS can stop your mobile phone from functioning altogether.
  2. The installation is a series of several sequential steps, and it can lead to a complete failure of the device in the event of an error.
  3. In an initial step, you must unlock the bootloader of your smartphone. The procedure for this differs according to the phone model. Some manufacturers, such as Sony, support their users in an exemplary manner. Information regarding unlocking the Sony bootloader can be found under developer.sonymobile.com/ unlockbootloader. Samsung, on the other hand, attempts to prevent this.
  4. Once this is managed, you need a custom ROM of LineageOS as well as a recovery ROM. The custom ROMs can be found under download.lineageos.org and the recovery ROMs under twrp.me/Devices.
  5.  After installing LineageOS, if you would like to use Google apps again, you will also have to download GApps, which can be found at opengapps.org. For the actual installation, there are many different ways and tools such as Minimal ADB and Fastboot or Odin. Instructions for several smartphones can be found on YouTube as well as on the XDA Developers forum.
